Shubman Gill has moved to within one rating point of the top spot in the latest ICC ODI batting rankings, released on Wednesday after India’s recent series against England.
Gill scored 188 runs in three matches during the series, which India lost 1-2. That effort has left him just behind New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell, who remains No. 1 with 802 rating points.
The latest update also keeps two other senior Indian batters near the top of the table. Virat Kohli is third with 767 points, while Rohit Sharma is fourth with 758 points. With Gill placed second, India now has three batters in the top five of the ODI batting rankings.
Gill closes in on Daryl Mitchell
Gill’s position is the main Indian takeaway from the update. He is now only one point short of Mitchell’s tally, making the gap at the top extremely narrow.
The ranking update follows a series in which England won by a 2-1 margin, but Gill still finished with a sizeable individual return across the three ODIs. His 188 runs helped him stay ahead of Kohli and Rohit in the ICC batting list.
Mitchell, however, continues to hold the No. 1 ranking for now. The ICC table places him at 802 points, with Gill immediately behind him. Kohli and Rohit follow in third and fourth, giving India a heavy presence in the upper section of the rankings.
England batters make gains after series win
England’s Joe Root was one of the biggest movers among established batters. He was named Player of the Series after making an unbeaten 249 runs and climbed four places to eighth in the ODI batting rankings.
Ben Duckett also gained ground after the series. He moved up 11 places to joint-19th. Jacob Bethell improved by five places and is now 64th in the batting list.
Those movements reflect England’s strong batting returns in the series against India. Root’s rise was the most notable among the England players mentioned in the update, while Duckett’s 11-place jump also stood out.
Shreyas Iyer rises, Kuldeep Yadav slips
Among other Indian players, Shreyas Iyer climbed two places to 13th in the ODI batting rankings. The update described him as India’s newly appointed T20I captain, while noting his movement in the ODI list.
In the bowling rankings, Kuldeep Yadav dropped out of the top 10. He is now placed 11th in the list, which is headed by Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan.
England fast bowler Jofra Archer also moved up after the ODI series against India. He rose one place to third among bowlers after taking five wickets in the series. Pakistan’s Abrar Ahmed is ahead of him, with Rashid Khan at the top of the bowling table.
The latest ICC update therefore brings a mixed picture for Indian players. Gill is very close to the No. 1 batting ranking, Kohli and Rohit remain in the top five, and Iyer has moved up. Kuldeep, meanwhile, has slipped just outside the top 10 among ODI bowlers.
