RBI Data: Forex Reserves Rise to $676.24 Billion

The Reserve Bank of India released its latest weekly data on July 24, 2026, covering foreign exchange reserves, scheduled commercial bank business, money stock, liquidity operations, and RBI loans and advances. The figures in the release are provisional, and the RBI noted that differences, if any, may be due to rounding off.

Forex reserves increase during the week

India’s total foreign exchange reserves stood at ₹65,11,163 crore, or US$676,237 million, as on July 17, 2026. The reserves increased by ₹74,942 crore over the week. In dollar terms, the weekly rise was US$1,080 million.

Compared with end-March 2026, total reserves were lower by ₹42,698 crore and US$14,871 million. On a year-on-year basis, the rupee value of reserves was higher by ₹5,18,790 crore, while the dollar value was lower by US$19,252 million.

  • Foreign currency assets were ₹53,05,830 crore, or US$551,057 million. They rose by ₹96,005 crore and US$4,549 million during the week.
  • Gold reserves were ₹9,79,689 crore, or US$101,749 million. They fell by ₹23,458 crore and US$3,480 million over the week.
  • Special Drawing Rights stood at ₹1,79,764 crore, or US$18,670 million.
  • The reserve position in the IMF was ₹45,881 crore, or US$4,761 million.

The RBI also clarified that foreign currency assets exclude SDR holdings of the Reserve Bank, investment in bonds issued by IIFC (UK), amounts lent under SAARC and ACU currency swap arrangements, and the RBI’s contribution to funding of Nexus Global Payments.

Bank deposits and credit

Scheduled commercial banks’ aggregate deposits stood at ₹2,62,84,574 crore as on July 15, 2026. Deposits declined by ₹2,59,710 crore over the fortnight. The year-on-year growth column for 2026 showed growth of 12.7%.

Within deposits, demand deposits were ₹31,91,601 crore, while time deposits were ₹2,30,92,973 crore. Demand deposits fell by ₹3,47,705 crore over the fortnight, while time deposits rose by ₹87,995 crore.

Bank credit stood at ₹2,17,33,383 crore as on July 15, 2026. It declined by ₹1,97,015 crore over the fortnight. The year-on-year growth column for 2026 showed bank credit growth of 17.7%.

Food credit was ₹1,20,730 crore, and non-food credit was ₹2,16,12,652 crore. Non-food credit accounted for most of total bank credit in the reported figures. It declined by ₹1,85,697 crore over the fortnight, while its year-on-year increase for 2026 was ₹32,01,753 crore.

The RBI noted that the banking data include the impact of the merger of a non-bank with a bank from July 1, 2023. It also said that under the Banking Laws (Amendment) Act, 2025, the definition of a fortnight has been revised from alternate Fridays to the 15th and the last calendar day of a month, with effect from December 15, 2025.

Money stock figures

Money stock, measured as M3, stood at ₹3,16,46,426 crore as on July 15, 2026. This was higher than ₹3,14,53,126 crore on March 31, 2026. For the financial year so far, M3 increased by ₹1,93,300 crore, or 0.6%.

Over the fortnight, M3 declined by ₹2,46,894 crore, or 0.8%. On a year-on-year basis, it increased by ₹35,05,170 crore, or 12.5%, according to the RBI’s 2026 column.

  • Currency with the public was ₹42,12,008 crore.
  • Demand deposits with banks were ₹33,44,685 crore.
  • Time deposits with banks were ₹2,39,68,560 crore.
  • Other deposits with the Reserve Bank were ₹1,21,173 crore.

Among the sources of money stock, net bank credit to the government was ₹93,45,605 crore as on July 15, 2026. Bank credit to the commercial sector was ₹2,25,83,517 crore.

Liquidity operations

The RBI’s liquidity operations data for July 13 to July 19, 2026, showed net absorption on each listed day. The reported net absorption was ₹1,49,332 crore on July 13, ₹1,58,876 crore on July 14, ₹1,40,768 crore on July 15, ₹93,280 crore on July 16, ₹80,972 crore on July 17, ₹1,64,025 crore on July 18, and ₹1,59,575 crore on July 19.

The Standing Deposit Facility amounts were among the main entries in the liquidity table. SDF stood at ₹1,55,296 crore on July 13, ₹1,59,077 crore on July 14, ₹1,46,366 crore on July 15, ₹1,17,446 crore on July 16, ₹1,57,598 crore on July 17, ₹1,65,462 crore on July 18, and ₹1,60,255 crore on July 19.

The RBI also reported variable rate repo operations of ₹18,425 crore on July 16 and ₹75,819 crore on July 17. The release expanded SDF as Standing Deposit Facility and MSF as Marginal Standing Facility.

RBI loans and advances

Under RBI loans and advances, lending to the central government was shown as zero for July 18, 2025, July 10, 2026, and July 17, 2026. Loans and advances to state governments stood at ₹20,629 crore on July 17, 2026, up ₹550 crore from the previous week but down ₹5,666 crore from the year-earlier figure of ₹26,294 crore.
