RBI reports net liquidity absorption of ₹3.40 lakh crore

The Reserve Bank of India reported net liquidity absorption of ₹3,40,120.94 crore in its latest money market and liquidity operations data. The figures were released on August 24, 2026, in Press Release No. 2026-2027/954.

The release said the net liquidity number includes both the day’s operations and outstanding operations. The RBI’s stated formula calculates net liquidity as repo plus MSF plus SLF, minus reverse repo and SDF. A negative figure means absorption.

Today’s RBI operations

For the day’s operations, the Marginal Standing Facility, or MSF, stood at ₹9,531.00 crore. The auction date was August 23, 2026, with a one-day tenor and maturity on August 24, 2026. The current rate shown for MSF was 5.50 per cent.

The Standing Deposit Facility, or SDF, was much larger at ₹1,62,921.00 crore for the same one-day tenor, also maturing on August 24, 2026. The current rate shown for SDF was 5.00 per cent.

Based on these operations, the RBI reported net liquidity injected from today’s operations at minus ₹1,53,390.00 crore. In other words, the day’s operations resulted in absorption on a net basis.

Outstanding operations

The RBI also listed outstanding variable rate reverse repo operations. One operation dated August 21, 2026 had a three-day tenor, matured on August 24, 2026, and carried an amount of ₹95,970.00 crore at a cut-off rate of 5.24 per cent. Another operation dated August 17, 2026 had a seven-day tenor, matured on August 24, 2026, and carried an amount of ₹98,945.00 crore at the same 5.24 per cent rate.

Under outstanding MSF, the release showed ₹0.00 crore for the August 22 operation and ₹55.00 crore for the August 21 operation, both maturing on August 24, 2026. The rate shown was 5.50 per cent.

Under outstanding SDF, the August 22 operation was shown at ₹0.00 crore, while the August 21 operation was ₹1,357.00 crore. Both matured on August 24, 2026, and the rate shown was 5.00 per cent.

The release also recorded ₹9,486.06 crore under Standing Liquidity Facility availed from the RBI. Including these items, net liquidity injected from outstanding operations was reported at minus ₹1,86,730.94 crore.

Money market volumes

The money market section showed no transaction volume in the listed overnight and term segments. The overnight segment total was ₹0.00 crore. Call money, triparty repo, market repo, and repo in corporate bond were each shown at ₹0.00 crore.

In the term segment, notice money, term money, triparty repo, market repo, and repo in corporate bond were also listed at ₹0.00 crore. The release marked weighted average rate and range as not applicable where there was no transaction.

Reserve position

The RBI reported scheduled commercial banks’ cash balances with the RBI at ₹7,92,903.03 crore as on August 23, 2026. The average daily cash reserve requirement for the fortnight ending August 31, 2026 was listed at ₹8,17,404.00 crore.

The Government of India surplus cash balance reckoned for auction as on August 21, 2026 was ₹0.00 crore. Net durable liquidity was reported as a surplus of ₹6,79,145.00 crore as on July 31, 2026.
