RBI Data: Forex Reserves Rise to $692.87 Billion on July 31

The Reserve Bank of India’s latest weekly statistical release showed India’s foreign exchange reserves at US$692.866 billion as on July 31, 2026. In rupee terms, total reserves stood at ₹66,12,148 crore.

The data, released by the RBI on August 7, also covered scheduled commercial bank business, money stock, liquidity operations and select items from the central bank’s balance sheet. The RBI said the figures are provisional and differences, if any, are due to rounding off.

Foreign exchange reserves

Total foreign exchange reserves rose by ₹24,233 crore over the week. In dollar terms, the weekly increase was US$10.512 billion. Compared with end-March 2026, reserves were higher by ₹58,287 crore, or US$1.758 billion. Over the year, reserves increased by ₹5,81,731 crore, or US$3.995 billion.

Foreign currency assets, the largest part of the reserves, stood at ₹53,88,865 crore, or US$564.680 billion, as on July 31. They rose by ₹21,541 crore over the week, equal to US$8.750 billion. Compared with end-March 2026, foreign currency assets were up by ₹1,51,498 crore, though in dollar terms they were higher by US$12.397 billion. On a year-on-year basis, the rupee value was up by ₹2,97,371 crore, while the dollar value was lower by US$16.927 billion.

Gold reserves were valued at ₹9,99,586 crore, or US$104.743 billion. They increased by ₹4,597 crore over the week, or US$1.685 billion. Against end-March 2026, gold reserves were lower by ₹94,724 crore, or US$10.653 billion. Over the year, they rose by ₹2,64,249 crore, or US$20.745 billion.

Special Drawing Rights stood at ₹1,78,132 crore, or US$18.666 billion. The reserve position in the IMF was ₹45,566 crore, or US$4.778 billion.

Bank deposits and credit

Scheduled commercial banks’ aggregate deposits stood at ₹2,62,84,574 crore as on July 15, 2026. Deposits fell by ₹2,59,710 crore over the fortnight, a decline of 1.0%. For the financial year so far in 2026-27, deposits were up by ₹55,787 crore, or 0.2%. On a year-on-year basis, deposits increased by ₹29,58,868 crore, or 12.7%.

Within deposits, demand deposits were ₹31,91,601 crore, while time deposits were ₹2,30,92,973 crore. Demand deposits fell by ₹3,47,705 crore over the fortnight. Time deposits rose by ₹87,995 crore over the same period.

Bank credit was ₹2,17,33,383 crore as on July 15. It fell by ₹1,97,015 crore over the fortnight, a decline of 0.9%. For the financial year so far, bank credit rose by ₹3,73,486 crore, or 1.7%. Year-on-year, it increased by ₹32,63,490 crore, or 17.7%.

Food credit was ₹1,20,730 crore. Non-food credit, which accounts for most bank lending, stood at ₹2,16,12,652 crore. Non-food credit fell by ₹1,85,697 crore over the fortnight but was up by ₹32,01,753 crore on a year-on-year basis.

The RBI noted that the bank data include the impact of the merger of a non-bank with a bank from July 1, 2023. It also said the definition of a fortnight has been revised under the Banking Laws (Amendment) Act, 2025, from alternate Fridays to the 15th and last calendar day of a month, with effect from December 15, 2025.

Money stock and liquidity

Money stock, measured as M3, stood at ₹3,16,46,426 crore as on July 15, 2026. This was down by ₹2,46,894 crore over the fortnight, or 0.8%. For the financial year so far, M3 was up by ₹1,93,300 crore, or 0.6%. On a year-on-year basis, it increased by ₹35,05,170 crore, or 12.5%.

Currency with the public was ₹42,12,008 crore. Demand deposits with banks were ₹33,44,685 crore, while time deposits with banks were ₹2,39,68,560 crore. Time deposits rose by ₹91,080 crore over the fortnight, while demand deposits fell by ₹3,49,425 crore.

Liquidity operations data showed net absorption on each day from July 27 to August 2. The largest net absorption during the period was ₹2,45,912 crore on July 31. The Standing Deposit Facility accounted for most of the absorption in the daily figures. Variable rate repo operations were reported on July 27 and July 29.

Loans and advances

In the RBI’s liabilities and assets data, loans and advances to the central government remained at zero. Loans and advances to state governments stood at ₹17,100 crore as on July 31, down from ₹24,197 crore a week earlier and ₹32,232 crore a year earlier.
