Pankaj Tripathi will be honoured with the Artist of Distinction award at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne 2026. The festival will recognise the actor for his contribution to Indian cinema and for a body of work that spans films and streaming projects.
The honour will also mark Tripathi’s first in-person appearance at the Melbourne festival. He is scheduled to receive the award in Australia during the event, which will run from August 13 to August 23, 2026.
Award presentation set for August 13
According to the festival announcement, the award presentation will take place at the Palais Theatre on August 13. IFFM describes itself as a major platform for Indian cinema outside India, bringing together films, filmmakers, actors and industry guests from India and other countries.
Tripathi’s selection for the honour comes after years of work across different kinds of projects. He has moved between mainstream Hindi cinema, independent-leaning films and web series, often playing characters drawn from everyday settings. His performances have made him one of the most recognised actors of his generation.
Tripathi says the recognition is deeply humbling
Reacting to the honour, Tripathi said receiving the Artist of Distinction recognition at IFFM is deeply humbling. He said stories have the power to cross language and geography, and that being recognised on an international platform is special for him.
The actor also credited the people he has worked with throughout his career. He said every milestone has been possible because of the trust and collaboration of filmmakers, writers, directors, fellow actors, technicians and audiences. He added that coming from a small village in Bihar, he had not imagined that the stories he became part of would travel across the world in this way.
Tripathi also said the moment is more memorable because he will attend the festival in person for the first time. He said he looks forward to meeting audiences in Australia and sharing the occasion with other artists from the industry.
Festival director praises his range
Mitu Bowmick Lange, director of the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne, said Tripathi is among the finest actors of his generation. She said his work has crossed language and cultural barriers, and praised the authenticity and empathy he brings to his roles.
Lange said the festival considers it a privilege to present him with the Artist of Distinction award. She described the recognition as a celebration of his work and his contribution to storytelling that has reached audiences in different parts of the world.
A career built across films and streaming
Tripathi’s career includes several widely known roles. He played Sultan Qureshi in Gangs of Wasseypur and Kaleen Bhaiya in the streaming series Mirzapur. His work in Mimi brought him a National Film Award, and he has also appeared in films and shows such as Newton, Stree, Bareilly Ki Barfi, Fukrey, Masaan, Criminal Justice, OMG 2 and Main Atal Hoon.
These projects show the range of spaces he has worked in, from ensemble comedies to crime dramas and social dramas. His screen presence is often associated with restrained dialogue delivery and a grounded approach to characters, whether the role is comic, serious or morally grey.
The festival announcement also referred to his ability to portray ordinary people with sincerity. That quality has been a recurring part of his public image as an actor, especially in roles where small gestures and quiet scenes carry much of the performance.
IFFM 2026 schedule
The Indian Film Festival of Melbourne 2026 is scheduled from August 13 to August 23. The festival is expected to feature a line-up of Indian films, filmmakers, actors and industry talent. Tripathi’s award presentation at the Palais Theatre on the opening date has been listed as one of the key events of the edition.
For Tripathi, the Melbourne honour adds another international recognition to a career shaped by steady work in Hindi cinema and digital entertainment. The actor’s first visit to IFFM will make the 2026 edition a notable stop in his professional journey.
