Australia May Weigh IPL Rest for Test Stars Before Ashes

Australia head coach Andrew McDonald has said the national team may have to make difficult calls on whether some of its leading Test players take part in the 2027 Indian Premier League, with a heavy international schedule building towards the Ashes.

The concern is mainly around workload and recovery. Australia’s 12-month programme includes 20 Tests and 14 white-ball internationals, beginning with a two-Test series against Bangladesh in Darwin and Mackay. The run also includes a five-Test tour of India before a five-Test Ashes series in England, according to Cricinfo.

The IPL window in 2027 is expected to sit between Australia’s tour of India and a possible World Test Championship final. That timing could make it the only meaningful break for senior fast bowlers to recover and prepare their bodies before another long stretch of Test cricket.

McDonald says IPL remains part of planning

McDonald did not frame the IPL as a problem by itself. He said the tournament has been part of Australia’s player management approach and can help players perform, especially in T20 cricket.

“I know people will start talking about the IPL and filling that time, and what does that look like,” McDonald told Cricinfo. “I’ve said this before, the IPL is part of our management plan for a lot of our players, and to expose our best players in what I believe is the best competition in terms of T20 cricket has its performance benefits as well. You’ve just got to balance that out.”

That balance is where Australia’s selectors, coaches and medical staff may have to intervene. Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Cameron Green and Travis Head are all currently associated with IPL franchises. Wicketkeeper Josh Inglis is also part of the Lucknow Super Giants squad.

For the Test side, the most sensitive issue is likely to be the fast-bowling group. Cummins, Starc and Hazlewood have carried major workloads for Australia across formats, and McDonald made clear that their recovery would be central to any decision.

Fast bowlers’ recovery a major factor

McDonald said the discussion should not be reduced only to country-versus-franchise terms. His focus, he said, was on giving the bowlers the best chance of being ready for the number of major matches Australia may play in that period.

“I know that people say, country versus franchise and all that, but the important part of this period is that we’re allowing our fast bowlers to reset their body, get everything in order to give themselves the best opportunity across the 20 or 21 games that everyone talks about,” he said.

He also said Australia’s players have generally taken responsible calls after speaking with the support staff.

“What I will say about our players is they make good decisions across the journey, and that’s underpinned by discussions with the medical team and coaches. They want to play for Australia. There’s an Ashes on the back of that. Hopefully, a World Test Championship final and into a World Cup. There’s a lot of important priority cricket for Australia in that period. So we’re going to have to make some decisions,” McDonald added.

Past IPL breaks offer a reference point

Australia have managed similar situations before. Cummins, Starc and Head did not play the IPL in 2023. They used that window to rest before a period in which Australia won the World Test Championship, played the Ashes, and then won the ODI World Cup.

The current situation may require a similar assessment, though no final decisions have been stated. The key question for Australia will be how to protect its senior Test players through a schedule that offers little space between major assignments.

For players, the IPL offers high-level T20 competition and match practice. For Australia’s Test plans, the same period could be needed for rest, conditioning and medical management. McDonald’s comments suggest that each case will be judged with the upcoming Test load in mind, especially for the pace attack.
