Aamir Khan Productions, Kabir Khan Films and Australia-based Mind Blowing Films have announced Silkyara 41, a feature film inspired by the rescue operation at the Silkyara Tunnel in Uttarakhand. The film will focus on the effort that brought 41 trapped workers to safety and will also feature the role of tunnelling expert Professor Arnold Dix.
The announcement was made on July 9 in Melbourne and Mumbai. The makers described the project as an Indo-Australian co-production, with creative and production teams from both countries involved in developing the film for an international audience.
Kabir Khan to direct Silkyara 41
Kabir Khan, known for Bajrangi Bhaijaan and 83, will direct the film. The screenplay has been written by Australian writer Andrew Anastasios, whose credits include The Water Diviner. The film is being jointly produced by Aamir Khan Productions, Kabir Khan Films and Mind Blowing Films.
The project is based on a real rescue mission that drew attention for the scale of coordination required to reach the workers. According to the makers, the film will recreate the pressure, uncertainty and teamwork involved in the operation, while keeping the human side of the incident at the centre of the story.

Aamir Khan said the story of the Silkyara Tunnel rescue had moved him deeply. In his statement, he described it as a story about courage, resilience, ingenuity and humanity in the face of difficult odds. He also linked the announcement to the growing ties between India and Australia, saying the film celebrates international cooperation and the human spirit.
Kabir Khan said the rescue was one of the most extraordinary human dramas of recent times. He said the lives of the trapped workers, the families waiting for them, and the people who worked on the mission made the story deeply human. The director added that he was honoured to bring the true story to the screen.

Professor Arnold Dix, whose expertise was important during the rescue mission, also responded to the film announcement. He said the rescue was never about one person, but about people from different disciplines, cultures and backgrounds working with one purpose: bringing 41 workers home safely. He said he hoped the film would remind audiences what people can achieve when they work together.
Mitu Bhowmick Lange AM, founder and CEO of Mind Blowing Films, said she felt the rescue story belonged on the big screen from the time she learned about it. She called it a story of hope, perseverance and collective determination, and said the collaboration with Aamir Khan Productions was special for the company.
Support from Australian leaders
The announcement also received comments from Australian leaders. Jacinta Allan MP, Premier of Victoria, said the project would further develop the relationship between Victoria and India through creative industries and co-production partnerships. She said the story reflected shared themes such as family, hard work, community, hope and a love of films.
Tony Burke MP, Minister for Home Affairs and Minister for the Arts, said he was glad the story of Australian and Indian collaboration in Silkyara 41 would be told on the big screen.
The makers have not yet announced the cast, additional production partners or release timeline. Further details about Silkyara 41 are expected to be shared later.
