Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s 1942: A Love Story is returning to cinemas on August 21, 2026. NH Studioz has announced the re-release after acquiring the filmmaker’s celebrated film catalogue.
The 1994 romantic drama has been restored in 8K resolution and remastered with Dolby 5.1 surround sound. The aim is to present the film closer to the way Chopra and his team had originally intended audiences to see and hear it.
A restored version for the big screen
The restoration work has been carried out in collaboration with L’Immagine Ritrovata in Bologna, Italy, and Prasad Film Labs in India. According to the announcement, the process has focused on improving the film’s visual detail while retaining its original look and cinematic intent.
The new sound mix is also an important part of the release. Chopra said that when the film first came out, many Indian theatres were not equipped to play proper Dolby surround sound. He recalled that the film was mixed in London and that special imported cables and surround speakers had to be installed at Metro cinema for it to play correctly in Dolby.
He also said that in some smaller cities, the sound did not play as intended because Dolby was effectively running in mono. With the restored version, Chopra said audiences will now be able to experience the sound design and colour palette in the way they were first visualised.
The cast and music of 1942: A Love Story
1942: A Love Story stars Anil Kapoor, Manisha Koirala and Jackie Shroff in key roles. The cast also includes Anupam Kher and Danny Denzongpa, along with several other actors.
The film is also remembered for its music by R.D. Burman. It was his final completed soundtrack, and the album continues to be closely associated with the film. Songs including Ek Ladki Ko Dekha, Kuch Na Kaho, Rim Jhim Rim Jhim and Rooth Na Jana remain among its best-known tracks.
The new Dolby 5.1 mix is expected to give the songs and background score a fuller theatrical presentation. For viewers who have only seen the film on television or digital formats, the re-release offers a chance to watch it in a restored cinema format.
NH Studioz begins re-release plan with Chopra catalogue
Shreyans Hirawat, Director of NH Studioz, said the acquisition of Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s film catalogue is an important step for the company. He said NH Studioz wants to bring these films back to theatres in the best possible quality, starting with 1942: A Love Story.
PVR INOX is also part of the theatrical rollout. Niharika Bijli, Lead Strategist at PVR INOX, said it has been a positive collaboration with Vinod Chopra Films to bring some of their well-known titles back to cinemas. She said the re-release gives younger viewers, who may not have watched the film in theatres, an opportunity to experience it on the big screen.
NH Studioz plans to reintroduce select classics from the Vinod Chopra Films catalogue after this release. Details of the next titles have not been announced in the source material.
