Kangana Ranaut has defended her controversial “lomdi” remark directed at veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah, saying her comment came in response to what she described as his repeated focus on Pakistan and his earlier remarks on political issues.
The actor-turned-politician made the comments while speaking about protests, student unrest and what she called selective reactions from the Hindi film industry. Her remarks were reported after she had criticised Shah while defending the government during NEET-related protests.
Kangana explains why she targeted Naseeruddin Shah
According to the source report, Kangana told ANI that she had spoken about Naseeruddin Shah because of a video in which, according to her, he had made “distasteful” comments and threats. She then linked her criticism to what she sees as a pattern in Shah’s public statements and work.
She was quoted as saying, “I said this about Naseeruddin Shah because he had made such a distasteful video in which he was making threats of this kind. And whenever you look at his films, interviews or statements, it is always about Pakistan.”
Kangana continued in Hindi, asking when this “love story” with Pakistan would end. She said that many years had passed since Partition and questioned why, in her view, this attachment had not ended. Her comments were aimed directly at Shah and were part of a broader criticism of voices in the film industry that she believes do not respond evenly to political issues.
Reference to protests outside her home
During the same remarks, Kangana recalled protests that she said had taken place outside her residence. She claimed that a large crowd had gathered and that the situation required a heavy police presence.
Describing the incident, she said that people had climbed up to the gate of her house and that “at least two and a half thousand people” were outside. She added that such a large police force had to be deployed that she and her family could not sleep at night.
Kangana then compared that experience with the situation at Jantar Mantar, saying that some people in the industry had reacted emotionally there but had not shown the same concern elsewhere. She used the phrase “crocodile tears” to describe what she saw as selective sympathy.
Questions Bollywood’s response to student issues
Kangana also spoke about young people involved in protests and questioned why the film industry’s concern, in her view, appeared limited to certain situations. Referring to children in Jharkhand, she asked whether they were not part of Gen Z as well.
She said, “But now that children in Jharkhand are facing this kind of oppression, aren’t they Gen Z too? Is someone only considered Gen Z if they act against the country or abuse the Prime Minister?”
She argued that the film industry had allowed itself to appear “anti-youth” and said that the same concern shown at Jantar Mantar should be shown for children in Jharkhand. Her comments did not name specific Bollywood figures in this portion of the statement, but the criticism was directed broadly at the industry’s response to protests.
What Kangana had said earlier
The “lomdi” remark came after Kangana had earlier made a strongly worded post targeting Naseeruddin Shah. In that comment, she said in Hindi that everyone is someone’s dog, but she took pride in guarding and fighting for the country whose bread she eats. She then accused Shah of eating in this country while, in her words, fighting for a neighbouring country.
Explaining her choice of words later, Kangana said she did not see being called a dog as an insult in the current context. She described loyalty and cuteness as rare qualities and said she would prefer to be a dog instead of a “lomdi” like Naseeruddin.
Her comments have remained part of a public dispute around politics, nationalism and the way members of the film industry speak about social issues.
