Hardik Pandya’s future with Mumbai Indians has become one of the main talking points ahead of the 2027 Indian Premier League season, with the franchise reviewing its plans after another disappointing campaign.
No trade has been confirmed. Mumbai Indians has also said it is not currently holding player-trade discussions. Even so, conversations around Hardik’s position had gathered pace before the end of IPL 2026, according to the report.
The issue comes at a time when Mumbai Indians is looking at a wider reset. The five-time IPL champion has not won the title for several seasons, and its recent run has been uneven. After a poor 2024 season, MI reached the playoffs in 2025, but its 2026 campaign led to a detailed internal review.
Mumbai Indians says review is still underway
An MI spokesperson told The Hindu that the franchise is still examining its season and has not taken a decision on any player trade.
“Our post-season review is currently on and we are looking into all aspects. Contrary to reports, we are not engaged in conversations with regard to player trade. The same is only possible once the review is complete,” the spokesperson said. “A range of options and ideas are being evaluated, which require time… hence no decisions have been made.”
That statement leaves the matter open, but it also makes clear that any formal move would come only after the franchise completes its review. The assessment is said to cover more than the captaincy, including the leadership group, coaching staff and broader cricket operations.
Several teams linked with the Hardik option
Chennai Super Kings has been mentioned as a possible destination if Hardik becomes available. Rajasthan Royals, Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Capitals have also been understood to be looking at the option.
At this stage, those possibilities remain part of early trade-market discussions. Most IPL teams are still reviewing their own seasons before finalising retention, release or trade plans for the next cycle.
Hardik’s status makes any such decision complicated. He is an India all-rounder and the current Mumbai Indians captain. A move involving him would need agreement between franchises and the player, and it would have to fit within the IPL’s trade rules and team-building plans.
Why the speculation has increased
One reason for the increased attention is Hardik’s decision to part ways with MI’s talent management arm. The report states that this has added to speculation, but it is not being treated as a complete break with the franchise.
Mumbai Indians has usually kept its core players for long periods. That history is one reason any decision around Hardik is unlikely to be simple or immediate. The franchise is weighing its options after a season that did not meet expectations, but there is no confirmed exit plan as of now.
