India’s first Test against Sri Lanka at the Galle International Stadium on Saturday, August 15, 2026, will arrive with several numbers attached to it. It will be India’s 600th Test match, Galle’s 50th Test as a venue, and Shubman Gill’s 10th Test as India captain.
Gill, however, kept the focus on a more immediate target when he spoke to the media on Friday. India are looking at the series as an important step in their attempt to reach the ICC World Test Championship final next year.
“The main goal is to play the World Test Championship final next year. We have to win around six or seven to have a chance of qualifying. In terms of that, this is a very important series,” Gill said.
Preparation time gets Gill’s approval
International schedules often leave teams with limited time to adjust before a Test series. Gill said this tour has been different because India arrived early and also played a warm-up match before the opening Test.
He said that kind of lead-in period matters, especially when players have to get used to local conditions before a five-day match.
“If the scheduling allows us to have at least a week or 10 days before a Test, it helps with the preparation. Last year we had a busy schedule and it is never easy. Most players require a bit of time to adjust with the conditions. So this extra time in preparation helps,” Gill said.
That preparation could be especially relevant in Galle, where conditions can ask different questions of batters and bowlers across the match. The surface, weather and open nature of the ground are all factors teams generally watch closely during a Test.
Padikkal and Prasidh receive backing
Gill also spoke positively about Devdutt Padikkal, who had earlier been in Sri Lanka with India A. The captain said Padikkal had shown enough quality to be considered a player with the tools for Test cricket.
“Devdutt was here earlier with India A and did well. He has got all the skills and the potential to succeed in this format,” Gill said.
Fast bowler Prasidh Krishna also came in for praise from the Indian captain. Gill said Prasidh’s recent bowling had impressed him.
“Prasidh recently has been bowling the best that I have ever seen him bowl,” he said.
The comments point to India keeping faith in players who may have roles to play during the series, though the final combination for the first Test will depend on the conditions and team plans.
Wind could influence batting plans in Galle
Gill praised the look and setting of the Galle International Stadium, a venue known for its open layout and coastal feel. At the same time, he said India would have to account for the wind during the match.
For batters, that could affect shot selection, especially against spin. Gill said a batter looking to attack a spinner would need to be aware of whether the wind was helping or working against the stroke.
“In grounds which are open, wind plays a crucial part. As a batter if you want to take on a spinner, we have to see if the wind is with us or against us,” he said.
India begin the Test with milestones in the background, but Gill’s message was direct. The series in Sri Lanka is tied to India’s push for a place in the World Test Championship final, and the captain believes wins here will be important for that target.
