The Delhi High Court has deferred the hearing on Salman Khan’s plea concerning the proposed film Kala Hiran: The Battle for Legacy. The matter will now be heard on July 1 before the roster bench.
Khan has sought legal restraint on the filming, promotion and release of the project. His plea claims that the film and its publicity material use references connected to his identity, public image and past legal proceedings without his permission.
Why the hearing was postponed
The case came up before the vacation bench of Justice Madhu Jain on Friday. During the hearing, counsel representing the filmmakers asked for more time to file a response to Khan’s application. The filmmakers’ side told the court that it had received the complete set of pleadings only recently.
After hearing both sides, the court noted this submission and directed Khan’s legal team to provide the full set of documents to the respondents during the day. The court then listed the matter for July 1.
The respondents named in the case include producer Amit Jani, Jani FireFox Films, director Bharat Shrinate, Akshay Pandey and others connected with the project.
Khan’s objection to the proposed film
Salman Khan’s plea says that Kala Hiran: The Battle for Legacy appears to draw from incidents linked to him, including the 1998 blackbuck hunting case, even though the film does not explicitly name him. His legal team has argued that the material released so far contains enough visual and contextual references for the public to identify him.
According to the application, a poster released in May 2026 allegedly shows a character resembling the actor and wearing a bracelet similar to Khan’s well-known blue bracelet. The plea says such references amount to an unauthorised use of his personality and publicity rights.
Khan has also objected to promotional content that allegedly shows the character carrying a firearm. His application argues that this may create a misleading impression because he was acquitted in proceedings connected to the Arms Act.
The actor’s legal team has further submitted that parts of the proposed film seem to refer to issues that are still pending before higher courts. It has argued that circulating such material could affect public perception of matters that remain under legal consideration.
Request for interim protection
Senior Advocate Sandeep Sethi, appearing for Salman Khan, urged the court to grant interim protection against the release and promotion of the film. He told the court that the teaser had already been released and argued that the respondents should not be allowed to use Khan’s identity and public image for promotion without authorisation.
The respondents opposed the request for interim relief. Their counsel sought time to place a formal response on record before the court considered the application further.
During the proceedings, counsel for the filmmakers also told the court that he had allegedly received death threats and had filed an FIR in connection with the matter. The source report does not provide further details about the FIR.
What happens next
For now, the Delhi High Court has not granted the interim relief requested by Khan. The immediate development is procedural: the filmmakers have been given time to respond, and the matter has been moved to July 1.
The next hearing is expected to consider the competing claims more fully after the respondents file their reply. Khan’s plea will remain focused on whether the proposed film and its promotional material unlawfully use his identity, persona and references to past legal matters.
Until the court passes a further order, the dispute remains pending before the Delhi High Court.
