Alia Bhatt has joined the cast of Tumbbad 2, the upcoming sequel to the 2018 fantasy horror film Tumbbad. The film will bring her together with Sohum Shah and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, with a theatrical release planned for December 3, 2027.
The sequel will be directed by Adesh Prasad. It is being produced by Sohum Shah Films in collaboration with Pen Studios.
Alia Bhatt joins the world of Tumbbad
Speaking about the film, Alia said the original Tumbbad had stayed with her since she first watched it. She described its world as original and immersive, and said it was rare for a film to keep growing in viewers’ imagination years after release.
Alia also said becoming part of that world felt special to her. She added that she was looking forward to working with Sohum Shah and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, calling them artists she has admired for a long time. According to her, the character she will play belongs to a story that is rich, mysterious and memorable.
Sohum Shah welcomes Alia to the sequel
Sohum Shah, who starred in and produced the first film, is returning to expand the Tumbbad story. He welcomed Alia to the project and said the team was delighted to have her on board. He called her one of the most talented actresses of her generation and said audiences would get to see something unique from her in the film.
He also noted that this will be his first collaboration with Alia. Sohum said he had followed her screen performances since her debut and was looking forward to working with her.
Pen Studios reunites with Alia Bhatt
Producer Dr. Jayantilal Gada also spoke about Alia joining Tumbbad 2. He said her casting was special for Pen Studios because it marks the banner’s third collaboration with her after Gangubai Kathiawadi and RRR.
Gada said Alia was the right choice for the film and that audiences would see her in a different way. He also said she understood the ambition behind the project quickly.
About the Tumbbad franchise
Tumbbad released in 2018 and received critical attention for its mix of folklore, fantasy and horror. The film later found renewed popularity after returning to theatres, where it became one of India’s successful re-releases.
With Alia Bhatt and Nawazuddin Siddiqui joining Sohum Shah, the makers are moving ahead with a new chapter in the story. Tumbbad 2 is currently scheduled to arrive in cinemas on December 3, 2027.
