Mukesh Chhabra and Bosco Martis have introduced The Big Break, a digital-first talent hunt for actors, singers and dancers from across India. The competition opened its call for entries on August 5 and is being built around social media auditions instead of a television-led format.
The initiative has been created by casting director Mukesh Chhabra and choreographer Bosco Martis. The format has been developed with Rajiv Lakshman and the show is produced by BARD.
The Big Break brings three performance categories under one platform: acting, singing and dancing. Participants can audition from their phones by sending a collaboration request to the official @thebigbreakindia handle, along with a performance video. Depending on the category, the entry may be a monologue, a song or a dance routine.
How the digital audition process works
The show is designed for platforms such as Instagram, YouTube and Snapchat. According to the details shared, around 40 to 60 entries may be accepted and published on the show’s social media channels each day.
Those who are selected will move through further stages of the competition. The process will later lead to an on-ground finale, with the show’s digital channels continuing to carry the contest.
The format is aimed at making the audition route easier for performers who may not have access to traditional industry spaces. Chhabra said the idea came from years of meeting artists from different places and backgrounds. He said, "Talent has never been limited to one city or one background, and after years of meeting artists from across the world, I felt it was time to make the journey between talent and the industry a little shorter."
Chhabra will mentor the acting segment. He said the team wanted to create a platform that is "accessible, inclusive, and designed for today’s digital generation," where actors, singers and dancers can be discovered on merit.
Mukesh Chhabra and Bosco Martis to mentor participants
Bosco Martis will mentor the dance segment of The Big Break. Speaking about the idea, he referred to his own early struggles as a performer and said those experiences shaped him.
Martis also pointed to the number of performers in India who do not yet have a formal platform. He said many talented dancers continue to learn and perform on terraces, in gullies and through online videos. The Big Break, according to him, is intended to bring the audition process closer to such performers.
After the early selection process, participants who move ahead will come to Mumbai for the competition stage. They will train and compete through weekly episodes and interactive sessions under the guidance of mentors.
Singing panel and music opportunities
The singing category will have a separate panel of Bollywood singers and composers. Their names are expected to be announced later.
The competition may also lead to professional music opportunities for singers. Performers who stand out during The Big Break will be considered for releases through BLM Music, Martis’ record label. Original music from the competition will also be released through the label.
Martis said the aim is to give talented individuals a genuine chance to launch their careers and present their work to a wider audience.
Rajiv Lakshman on the format
Rajiv Lakshman, who worked on developing the format, said the digital-first approach was central from the beginning. He said, "The Big Break isn’t a television format retrofitted for the internet. It was designed for these platforms from the first line of the brief."
The competition will conclude with an on-ground gala finale. Since the first audition stage begins on social media, the show will use the public-facing entry process as part of the viewing experience.
